My grandkids call me BigPop!

Principal and Financial Adviser

Right from the start of my career as an adviser in the financial services industry way back in 1980, I’ve always been driven by the desire to really help people. It’s been a privilege to work with my clients over this time and guide them in achieving their goals and dreams at each stage of their lives. Life is to be enjoyed, not endured!

When you get to know me you’ll realise I really walk the talk. We all work hard and we want to be working hard for something meaningful. It’s enormously satisfying to be able to play a part in and witness clients accomplishing great financial and lifestyle outcomes.

For me, water skiing and relaxing on the River Murray with my wife, two children, four gorgeous grandchildren and my great friends is where you’ll find me most weekends and holidays.

“But the Albion sails on course”

Financial Adviser

I joined the finance industry in 2016 because it would provide an opportunity for me to make a difference to people’s lives. I now feel very privileged being in a position to help my clients get to a better place financially, it’s the best part of my role.

Having grown up in Strathalbyn, I love that I am working where I can give back to the community that nurtured me. I get a real sense of value out of being involved in my local community, and am currently serving as secretary of the Strathalbyn Football Club.

I enjoy a round of golf on the weekends (particularly when I play well) and am a bit of test cricket tragic. I appreciate a decent drop of red, especially when shared with friends, and like to relax with a good book.

Professional Qualifications and Memberships

  • Bachelor of Finance (University of Adelaide)
  • Diploma of Financial Planning (Kaplan)
  • Certificate IV in Finance and Mortgage Broking
  • Member of the Finance Brokers Association of Australia (FBAA)

Chocolate and wine can make an ordinary day outstanding!

Office Manager

When I started working at KTA Financial Services in 2014, it didn’t take me long to realise I had joined a business with a caring culture, filled with staff who work hard and genuinely want to help clients, I felt right at home!

My role is to organise and maintain all aspects of the business, to ensure the practice runs smoothly and efficiently while meeting our clients’ needs. Every day brings a new challenge (from building renovations to legislative and regulatory change), but as a team we address these challenges together.

My favourite thing is to travel and explore new places with my husband and children – when I’m home I love relaxing with my family and friends enjoying a cold bevvie and great food, while having fun and a laugh.

Professional Qualifications and Memberships

  • Bachelor of Business Studies (Monash University)

For me, the best things in life are the people I love, the places I’ve been and the memories I’ve made along the way.

Senior Client Services Officer

In 2010, I moved to the Fleurieu Peninsula with my husband. Having grown up in a small rural town, I loved the community feel when I started working at KTA Financial Services. Kym has always said he wants to be able to look people in the eye when he walks down the street and he enables us to do the same. This is one of the reasons I have remained at KTA longer than anywhere in the past.

With 11 years finance industry experience, I initially worked in SMSF administration, prior to making the change to assist Financial Planners. This diverse knowledge and my problem solving skills led to my appointment as team leader in 2015 and I continue to enjoy the challenges this role provides.

I really enjoy helping our clients reach their goals and developing our relationship. I love living on the Fleurieu – but take every opportunity to go camping, preferably out bush!

Professional Qualifications and Memberships

  • Bachelor of Arts (Flinders University)

If “Plan A” doesn’t work, the alphabet still has 25 more letters...

Senior Client Services Officer

Having known Kym since my teenage years, when the possibility arose to join KTA Financial Services in 2012, I jumped at the chance!

With over 30 years of industry experience and knowledge, being given the opportunity to join such a progressive and reputable practice was an ideal way for me to utilise my extensive skill set.

The relationships I build with clients, and my genuine desire to assist them through all their life stages, is what keeps me in this industry.

I’m a retired netballer (wish I could still play but my knees don’t agree) and enjoy watching any good sporting event - preferably live and featuring my kids!

I recently discovered yoga, and am learning how to be more flexible (in movement that is!), and love curling up with a good book and a cup of tea (leaf, no bag!).

Karina Twartz

I do more kilometres than an uber driver!

Client Services Officer

I am originally from Sydney and have a background in the finance industry.

I started at KTA as a casual employee in July 2017 and became a permanent fixture in February 2019. I have found my niche amongst a great team of people and feel like I truly belong.

Everyone at KTA really care! They care about their work and the well-being of clients, which is so refreshing. I find the work varied, sometimes challenging and always rewarding.

With two teenage children most of my weekends are spent behind the steering wheel of my car, ferrying them from A to B.

Occasionally I do get to enjoy some downtime with friends to indulge in the fabulous food and wine on offer from the region. Life is pretty good really!

My children take up most of my spare time.

I joined KTA in an administrative role in February 2019 after working in real estate for the previous 5 years. I was handed the mantle of Receptionist when I took over from the long-serving Sue in October the same year. Since then, there is never a dull moment and I am learning new things every day.

I am looking forward to getting to know all the lovely clients at KTA, putting faces to names, and I am thoroughly enjoying my new role.

Thanks to my hubby and two gorgeous girls I don’t get much down time, but when I do get the chance I like to curl up with a good book, or catch up for dinner and drinks with friends.

Having emigrated from England I love the lifestyle of Australia and really enjoy living and working in the beautiful township of Strathalbyn, what a fabulous place!

Financial Advice

Financial advice is determining how an investor is going to meet their goals and objectives. It is about helping clients define their goals, gathering information and analysing data to make a plan, then implementing the plan and monitoring the results. It is also monitoring and updating goals and objectives as clients move through different phases of life.

'Failing to plan is planning to fail.' It's a cliché but when it comes to investing money, setting and then attaining long term financial objectives, then it makes a lot of sense to have a plan. Also, history shows time and again that the sooner you can start the better the outcomes.

Attaining long term objectives is better served by setting some short term goals. For example, such milestones might be set for 1-3 years, then 4-6 years and then 7+ years.

However, just having a plan isn’t enough. It needs to be regularly revisited and amended accordingly. Like the initial drafting of a plan the ongoing monitoring can be complex, increasingly so due to an increasing number of rule and regulation changes. We can help you manage this complexity and provide ongoing monitoring.

Our primary aim is to help you attain your financial objectives.

At KTA Financial Services we will provide the time and expertise needed to help you implement the best financial strategy possible. Contact us today to discuss how we can work together.

Superannuation is mandatory but taking an early and active interest in it is critical to ensuring the benefits it can offer are maximised by the time you retire. Many will have a superannuation scheme through employment but increasing numbers are starting their own Self Managed Super Fund (SMSF).

However, for many, simply relying on employer contributions may not be enough and you may need to look at strategies such as additional contributions or salary sacrifice. Older Australians will need to focus even more on their superannuation strategies because most came to this form of saving later in life.

It is always best to start saving and planning for your retirement as early as you can.

At KTA Financial Services we will provide the time and expertise needed to help you implement the best financial strategy possible. Contact us today to discuss how we can work together.

Self Managed Super Funds

Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSFs) offer a good strategy option for many individuals, families and small business owners to build tax effective wealth and to protect assets over time. SMSFs are becoming popular for those who are ready to take control of their own super investments as they give you ultimate control and flexibility to manage your retirement benefits.

It must be noted though, that you will have increased responsibilities as a trustee of the fund. As a SMSF Trustee you need to keep up to date with all required regulations and keep up with the fast paced financial markets.

KTA Financial Services can work with you to understand your personal financial situation and decide whether a SMSF structure is appropriate for you. We will also make sure your assets are invested in the most effective way to maximise your retirement benefits.

Should you wish to consider establishing a SMSF then we can help with:

  • Establishing your fund
  • Annual Compliance Services
  • Portfolio Administration Services
  • Pension advice
  • Superannuation Advisory Services

At KTA Financial Services we will provide the time and expertise needed to help you implement the best financial strategy possible. Contact us today to discuss how we can work together.

Retirement Planning

Retiring on your own terms is not always easy to achieve, however it is evident that those who plan for retirement are more likely to do so. Results also show that obtaining professional help during the pre-retirement years further improves the probability of attaining your retirement objectives.

The earlier you start implementing a plan the better the outcomes.

During one’s working life there is always an income to make ends meet when raising children, paying off a mortgage, and myriad other lifestyle costs.

Retirement planning is about the lifestyle you will have after you stop work and receiving employment income. Planning focuses on issues such as how much superannuation is enough, taking a super pension, claiming the Age Pension, making superannuation contributions while receiving a pension from a super fund, estate planning and looking after your family.

Planning properly is becoming even more important now we are expected to live longer. This greater need means that professional help has never been more important as well.

At KTA Financial Services we will provide the time and expertise needed to help you implement the best financial strategy possible. Contact us today to discuss how we can work together.

Investment Strategies

Investing your hard earned savings can be complex to manage and benefit from. There are many issues such as levels of risk, market timing, asset classes, and your own goals, objectives and preferences that need to be considered. Even getting started is difficult but this is where we have the time and expertise to help you.

Even after initial investments are made there are important issues that need to be addressed such as monitoring, buy/sell decisions, tax considerations, and when to take a loss or profit. In addition, there is a huge amount of investment information and spruiking that can easily lead you in the wrong direction with unwanted consequences.

Market volatility simply makes the situation harder and can often lead investors into emotive and rushed decisions.

Having a proper investment plan is very important and the sooner you implement it the sooner you can grow your wealth. We can help you develop a financial plan and provide advice that will help overcome the issues raised above.

At KTA Financial Services we will provide the time and expertise needed to help you implement the best financial strategy possible. Contact us today to discuss how we can work together.

Insurance isn’t just a cost, though it often feels like it. You buy peace-of-mind that should a serious issue effect you then the consequences won’t unduly affect your family. Insurance provides you with the ability to manage the financial and emotional impact of some of the more drastic surprises, whether personally or in your small business.

Insurance can’t replace a loved one but it can help reduce the financial burden by providing the capital to ensure your family has choices.

A yes to any of the following questions means you have a need for insurance coverage. However, many Australians are underinsured and the consequences can be very serious for families should there be a death or serious injury.

  1. Do you have a mortgage?
  2. Do you have school fees?
  3. Do you have any personal loans?
  4. Do you have any credit card debt?
  5. Do you have dependents?
  6. Would your financial position be affected if you were to suffer from an illness or injury?
  7. Do you want to have enough capital to look after your dependents if you were unable to care for them for an extended period of time or perhaps indefinitely?

We understand that it can be difficult determining the type and level of cover you might need, let alone choosing an insurer. We can assist by helping you determine your needs and recommend an insurer that is right for you. Contact us today to discuss how we can work together.

Estate Planning

Your estate is made up of everything you own. This includes your home, property, furniture, car, personal possessions, business, investments, superannuation and bank accounts. Firstly, having a legally valid will is extremely important, as without one it is called 'dying intestate'. This can be costly and create added stress for loved ones at an already difficult time. You may think that having a current will outlines what will happen to your estate should you die or become unable to manage your affairs. Unfortunately, for those with more complex financial structures this may not be the case at all.

To make sure your affairs are in order an Estate Plan will:

  • provide for and protect loved ones with specific needs, including children
  • ensure your children’s inheritance receives increased protection if a relationship breaks down
  • ensure you receive professional advice on how to structure your assets to gain available tax advantages
  • ensure your wishes are recorded in legally binding documents including your will, free from ambiguity
  • provide you with peace of mind knowing, should you die or be unable to legally manage your affairs, that they will be managed by someone you trust
  • ensure non-estate assets such as jointly held assets, family trusts, super funds and private companies are also documented as it may not be possible to deal with them in your will.

At KTA Financial Services we will provide the time and expertise needed to help you implement the best financial strategy possible. Contact us today to discuss how we can work together.

Aged Care

Aged care is an increasingly complex area for us all to navigate but we have little choice. Issues such as changing legislation, taxation issues, bonds, care facilities, general planning, types of assisted living, Centrelink, and estate planning need to be considered. And all this at a time in life when managing such matters can become increasingly daunting and difficult.

We specialise in managing all matters to do with aged care and can help in the following ways:

  • Preparation of your age pension application and review forms.
  • Attending your pension application reviews on your behalf.
  • Identification of opportunities that may assist with increasing and maximising your pension.
  • Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) - We arrange for and attend all ACAT assessments and assist with documentation prior to your admission into your selected "Assisted Living Aged Care Facility".
  • Assisting with the set up of automatic bill payment services
  • Connecting you with care assessment teams and home support services
  • Participating at family meetings to help ease the stress of challenging conversations during difficult times for your family
  • Working with your accountant and lawyer to ensure the needs of your parents are well supported.

At KTA Financial Services we will provide the time and expertise needed to help you implement the best financial strategy possible. Contact us today to discuss how we can work together.

Our Process

The first appointment

This is an obligation and fee-free discussion to let you know who we are and what we do, identify the financial planning services you seek or require, and an opportunity for you to decide if you are happy for us, as financial planners to assist you.

We will provide you with our current Financial Services & Credit Guide (FSCG) which gives details of our qualifications, experience and the areas on which we are authorised to provide advice, and we will also explain our fee structure.

At the end of this meeting we look to determine whether you are happy for us to proceed with the preparation of a financial plan for you, and begin to collect information from you to do this.

We will collect information regarding your financial situation and lifestyle, discussing your concerns, goals and objectives for the purpose of providing you with specific recommendations with a full Financial Plan.

The second appointment

Once compiled, we will present your financial plan and explain how our strategy and recommendations will address your concerns and satisfy your needs and objectives.

Your financial plan will cover:

  • Your current situation.
  • The strategy and recommendations.
  • Actions required by you to proceed with the implementation of the recommendations.
  • All fees and charges relating to the preparation and implementation of the recommendations.
  • Which of our on-going service packages would suit you best.
  • We will then encourage you to take some time to give further consideration to the strategy and recommendations before proceeding.

The third appointment

We will provide further explanation of any point or issue within the plan that you may be unsure of, or that you do not fully understand so that you are then in a position to make an informed decision about proceeding. This will include discussion on any adjustments to the plan we might need to make for you.

We will then assist you to complete all documentation required to implement the recommendations, before forwarding these documents to the respective parties for processing and putting your financial plan into place.

The follow-up appointment

Once you have received all of your processed documentation from the various parties (fund managers, etc) we ask that you contact us again so we can check that all documentation is in order (either by discussion over the phone or a follow up appointment). We provide a special Client Folder to assist with document storage and to bring to future review meetings.

On-going Service

One of the most important factors in maintaining an effective financial plan is to ensure that it remains relevant and continues to meet your needs and goals over the years.

With our on-going financial ‘coaching’ and by conducting regular reviews of your situation, needs, goals & objectives, we can help you to stay focused by addressing changes to your circumstances as they happen. This ensures that your financial plan keeps up with what you need and want it to do.
